Jamaal Bowman Loses Democratic Primary Amidst Expensive Campaign
Historically Costly Race Concludes with Moderate Victory
Executive Latimer Leads with Wide Margin
Jamaal Anthony Bowman, an American politician and former educator, conceded defeat in the Democratic primary for New York's 16th congressional district on June 25, 2024. With 84% of the vote counted, moderate White county executive Latimer led Bowman by a significant margin of 584 to 416.
Bowman's defeat marks the end of an expensive and contentious campaign. The incumbent congressman faced criticism for his progressive views and his support for the "Squad," a group of progressive Democratic lawmakers. Latimer, on the other hand, positioned himself as a more moderate alternative, appealing to voters who felt Bowman was too extreme.
The race was one of the most expensive congressional primaries in history, with both candidates spending millions of dollars on advertising and campaign infrastructure. Bowman was supported by national progressive groups, while Latimer received backing from establishment Democrats.
In concession speech, Bowman thanked his supporters and pledged to continue fighting for progressive values. Latimer, in his victory speech, promised to bring a "common sense" approach to Washington.
